Additive manufacturing/3D printing

The term ‘additive manufacturing’, often referred to as ‘3D printing’, comes from Latin ‘addere’, meaning ‘to add’. Additive manufacturing processes build an object element by element or layer by layer. Three concrete applications exist, i.e. prototype production, end product manufacture as well as tool manufacture. Additive manufacturing not only supports better ways of addressing specific customer demands, but also means shorter production times since several components can be manufactured simultaneously. The main materials used are metals, plastics or composite materials which are usually available as fine powder that is heated and then used in the production process.
