With CultLab3D, cultural assets should be captured three-dimensionally and in very high quality. The quality of the data should be suitable to meet scientific demands that previously required original originals. The envisaged system was to revolutionise the market, especially with regard to the effort (including scanning speed), the achievable quality and the costs.
The solution approach was based on three pillars:
Development of a novel scanning technology in the form of the mobile digitisation laboratory (CultLab3D), which was to consist of flexibly usable modules for the acquisition of 3D geometries and material properties.
Use of semantic technologies: An ontology for recording and classifying cultural objects was to be created. In addition, the digital 3D cultural objects were connected via their metadata and semantic descriptions to external information sources with cultural background knowledge, such as digital libraries or information on the internet.
Conception and evaluation of new business models to prove the economic viability of the new technology.
During the project implementation, the focus was on the recording of selected object classes such as vases, coins, weapons (spearheads), busts. The recording of monuments was not part of the project.
