In day-to-day life, people use membership cards or certificates to identify themselves when they want to use different services. The central issue of digitalizing identity credentials is that the process appears to be too cumbersome and thus inefficient: one first has to scan and then upload their credentials. In today’s digital world, people identify themselves through user accounts. However, user accounts only contain parts of one’s personal data and can often solely be used for a limited number of online services.

There are numerous ID services, but they are not interoperable with each other. Because of that, users have many accounts and apps that they need to set up, learn to master and regularly maintain. Moreover, online service providers face large overhead costs for integrating various services. This has an impact on the real economy, as companies in all industries rely on efficient and secure digital interactions with customers and partners.

The vision of the ID-Ideal project is a legally secure digital space called TrustNet. In TrustNet, parties are uniquely identifiable, exchanged information is verifiable, and transactions are legally secure. At the same time, data sovereignty can be ensured for all parties.

To realize this vision, ID-Ideal focuses on the following central aspects:

  1. The definition of a trust framework that will serve as a set of rules to harmonize various ID service policies and to create standards for the secure exchange of identity credentials.
  2. The development of incentives for the increased usage of such services. This includes a high degree of relevance in everyday life, very good usability, as well as the possibility to utilize own data economically.
  3. The establishment of the TrustNet initiative, an open community that promotes transfer, certification, exchange, and further development.

Interoperability between the different technical solutions is crucial to achieve the most widespread use possible. Certain smartphone apps that act as digital wallets enable digital identities and other digital credentials such as certificates, deeds, authorizations, and tickets to be stored. They accept secure details that various authorities and institutions issue as digital identities. This requires standardized digital formats and interfaces. Likewise, if users want to identify themselves to corporations or public authorities, they must have compatible interfaces. The interaction between these partners will be carried out through ID ecosystems. ID-Ideal aims to drive the standardization forward and, therefore the interoperability of these ecosystems with the ID-Ideal trust framework as a neutral, common basis.

In the coming years, ID-Ideal will test and further develop the technological bases in Saxony’s showcase regions -especially in Dresden, Leipzig, and Mittweida. ID-Ideal is a project of the showcase programme “Secure Digital Identities” that promotes approaches for new, open, interoperable, and easy-to-use ID ecosystems.
