The competition “Secure Internet services – secure cloud computing for SMEs and the public sector (Trusted Cloud)” aims to fund research and development activities (R&D activities) relating to efficient, innovative, secure and legally compliant cloud computing solutions in order to accelerate their development and encourage high levels of usage. High priority is given to data security, trust and reliability.

The project is aimed at both users and providers of these technologies and services. The R&D activities conducted in the course of pilot projects are designed to deliver system solutions for SMEs and the public sector (in particular at the municipal and state level). The research projects develop and test solution approaches for removing technical, structural, organisational and legal obstacles to the use of cloud computing in SMEs and the public sector.

The Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (Bundesministerium für Wirtschaft und Klimaschutz, BMWK) launched Trusted Cloud in September 2010 as a technology competition. In all, 116 project proposals were submitted. The 14 most promising projects were selected in a multi-phase process with the assistance of an independent expert jury; research and development activities began in September 2011.
