Quantum computing in practice: QCHALLenge investigates industrial use cases
Quantum computing is regarded as a key technology with great potential for numerous sectors of the economy. However, it is still unclear which specific industrial applications are actually worth using it in. The BMWE-funded QCHALLenge project has carried out a practical test.
The potential areas of application for quantum computers are known in principle: They range from the simulation of physical systems to the optimisation of complex processes and the acceleration of machine learning. However, it remains to be seen in which areas quantum computers can actually deliver economic added value.
The BMWE-funded project QCHALLenge from the technology programme "Quantum Computing - Applications for Industry" has made an important contribution to this. More than a dozen specific use cases from industrial partners SAP, BASF, BMW and Siemens were systematically analysed - from the placement of sensors for driverless transport systems in factory halls to the prediction of purchasing prices for goods.
A generalisable software framework for modelling use cases was published so that the results can be used beyond the consortium. In addition, a roadmap was created that shows the path from research to application. Details can be found in the results profile of the programme support.
