ONCE
Showcase region: Hessen, Bavaria, and North Rhine-Westphalia
The project ONCE is developing applications for the federal state of Hessen and partner cities in Bavaria and North Rhine-Westphalia where the citizens can use digital identities when interacting with public authorities, using public transportation, or in the tourism and hotel industry.
The project focuses on developing digital identities with a high level of technical security that originate from trustworthy institutions and companies. Companies and administrations should be supported in the digitalization of their services with digital IDs and online documents for the purpose of accessing the corresponding digital identities.
For this reason, ONCE is developing the following applications: ONCE Wallet-App will enable the administration and transfer of ID data on smartphones and the subsequent control via access management. The separate back-end system (‘lifecycle management’) includes functions for blocking and updating digital identities; for example, in case of a change of address the data on the smartphone must be changed accordingly. In ONCE ID Gateway, identity data is transferred to service providers as needed. Integration interfaces are designed to enable operators of online services to use and verify the ID data.
ONCE puts the smartphone at the center of the customer- and citizen-centric identity management. It strengthens the citizens’ control over their identity data by using a local smartphone ID. ONCE is a project of the showcase programme “Secure Digital Identities” that promotes approaches for new, open, interoperable, and easy-to-use ID ecosystems.
