Franco-German AI cooperation strengthens Europe's technological sovereignty

Working together for Europe's digital future: five Franco-German research projects show how AI can make our world more resilient, sustainable and innovative. Whether smart robotics, early epidemic detection or climate-friendly renovation – the projects stand for strong cooperation, practical solutions and the technological future of Europe.

Five Franco-German research projects in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) have shown in recent years how effective cross-border cooperation is in strengthening innovation and resilience in Europe. The German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWE) and the French Ministry of Economics, Finance and Industrial and Digital Sovereignty have funded joint projects totalling around 17 million euros to develop AI solutions for social and industrial challenges – from sustainable production and health protection to climate-friendly mobility.

Five projects, diverse solutions
The projects launched in 2022 illustrate the thematic diversity of the cooperation: AIOLOS researched AI models for the early detection of epidemics, CONTRAILS combined physical models and AI to better understand the climate impact of contrails, RenovAIte developed AI-supported tools to increase efficiency in building renovation, GreenBotAI and GANResilRob worked on intelligent, resource-saving robotics solutions for flexible production environments. Compact results profiles from the DLR Projektträger provide a quick overview of key findings and future prospects.

Political framework, looking ahead
The cooperation goes back to the Aachen Treaty of 2019, in which Germany and France agreed to work closely together on future technologies. It exemplifies the joint strategy of both countries to strengthen Europe's competitiveness, expand technological sovereignty and increase crisis resilience.

AI will remain a key area of bilateral cooperation in the future. The Franco-German Economic Agenda adopted in August 2025 underlines this claim: it focuses on coordinated initiatives in areas such as digital sovereignty, cutting-edge technologies and industrial competitiveness – as well as the successfully completed AI projects that enable joint innovation for a strong Europe.
